The Manual has definitive statements about assessment, appropriate classroom language for use with students and some of the teaching and learning approaches used in the components of the Choral English College English Program listed above. These approaches include Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), Phonics, Total Physical Response (TPR) and Choral Speaking.

The Manual is intended for use by the individual teacher and complements the teacher training program available to Choral English College personnel.

The Choral English College has developed high-quality English language programs for elementary-school-aged Korean students. The program is based upon the latest English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) acquisition research, and methodologies, and employs a variety of innovative and effective approaches including:

Communicative Language Teaching (CLT)
Total Physical Response (TPR)
Choral Speaking
Phonics
Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL)

The Choral English College program aims to develop students' abilities to:

communicate using English in real-world, everyday situations
communicate both accurately and fluently in English
speak clearly with 'native speaker like' pronunciation
use a wide range of English vocabulary functions and grammatical structures
develop and refine independent learning skills
increase English subject knowledge in line with, and beyond, the Korean school English curriculum.

The Choral English College has developed the English program with the following assumptions in mind:

The role of teaching is to facilitate learning.
Language is most effectively acquired when learners are actively involved in using language as a means to communicate and achieve desired ends.
Activities that promote real communication promote learning.
Using English to carry out meaningful tasks promotes learning.
Meaningful language use supports the learning process.
All language students should be actively involved in using English throughout each lesson.
Speaking, listening, reading, and writing are best learned using an integrated approach.
Materials and resources used in lessons should be authentic and drawn from the real world.
Language learning is greatly promoted by interaction with native speakers.
Language proficiency enriches communities intellectually, educationally, and culturally.
Language proficiency contributes to economic, diplomatic, strategic, scientific, and technological development, and improves social cohesion, communication, and understanding in an ever-shrinking world.

The Choral English College's approach to teaching English as a foreign language is uniquely distinctive. It creates opportunities for students to use the English language and culture in meaningful and purposeful ways, in a secure and motivational learning environment.
